Here in Liberty Hall, we are so excited about this year’s theme – it is perfect for us because we are all striving to be lifelong learners ourselves. We all know that at the core of learning is reading. And leaders, in particular, seem to read more than almost anyone else. If you think about it, isn’t a curious thirst for knowledge often cited as a common characteristic of great leaders? Lincoln is known for reading both the New Testament and Shakespeare; FDR enjoyed Rudyard Kipling, and Dr. Solsrud loves to read about the history of education or anything pertaining to freedom. There are many other examples among great leaders.
Most readers will tell you that they caught their love of books at an early age, usually from a parent or teacher. It’s exciting how a great book can grab our imaginations and take us to inspiring and uncharted places. Reading can have a huge influence on our lives. Often, a love of reading can easily guide a child to a love of learning—a desire that builds strong leaders over time.
We need to remember that when it comes to learning, the brain can be compared to a muscle, and just like a muscle, it has to be regularly exercised. Just as our arm or leg muscles strengthen with exercise, we can develop or grow our intellect as well – by reading and learning and feeding our imagination and curiosity. Children must never feel limited or stymied by the idea that something is too hard or too challenging. We always seek to keep their "lamps of learning brilliantly lit". Our intellects are not set – they can grow and stretch over time – with exercise and perseverance and a love of learning. It is an exciting and never ending road. Join us with your scholar as we begin another year of seeking knowledge, truth and new ideas!
